Topics include residency application strategies, visa processes, cultural adaptation, resources for settling in the US, work-life balance, starting a family, self-care, pathways to permanent residency, bridging medical practices, and building support networks. Insights aim to guide IMGs through these complexities, enhancing their preparation and integration into US healthcare.

Dr. Shivantha Amarnath is an American Board of Internal Medicine certified physician currently pursuing his three-year Gastroenterology & Hepatology fellowship training at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell, based at Staten Island University Hospital (SIUH). In his role as Chief Fellow for the Division of Gastroenterology, Dr. Amarnath is not only advancing his own expertise but also playing a pivotal role in mentoring and educating the next generation of medical professionals.
Dr. Amarnath's journey in the medical field began with a BSc (Hons) in Biology in England, where he demonstrated exceptional academic prowess and a keen interest in biological sciences. His academic achievements and commitment to the advancement of biological sciences earned him the title of honorary inductee of the Royal Society of Biology, UK. He subsequently pursued a medical degree at St. George’s University, Grenada (SGU), graduating in 2017. His commitment to medical excellence was further recognized when he was inducted into the Arnold P. Gold Foundation’s Gold Humanism Honor Society, a nomination by his peers that underscores his compassionate approach to medicine.
Upon completing his medical degree, Dr. Amarnath began his three-year Internal Medicine training at SIUH, where he also served as Chief Resident for the Department of Internal Medicine. During his training, Dr. Amarnath received numerous accoldaes including multiple poster presentation awards for his research at both Northwell and the American College of Gastroenterology. His dedication to education and mentoring was recognized with the Medical Student Educator of the Year Award and the Residency Teacher of the Year Award. His contributions to research earned him induction into the Sigma Xi – Scientific Research Honor Society.
Dr. Amarnath's clinical expertise is complemented by a strong focus on patient-centered care. He is committed to improving patient outcomes through personalized treatment plans and compassionate care, ensuring each patient receives the highest standard of medical attention.
